The Washington Nationals have been named one of five finalists for the 2026 Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence, as announced by Major League Baseball. This recognition highlights the Nationals' ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity in Washington, D.C., particularly through their Nationals Youth Baseball Academy located in Ward 7. According to Nationals Press Releases, the Academy has been instrumental in delivering over 1.4 million meals to the community since 2018, with plans to distribute at least 100,000 more meals this year.
Ward 7, where the Academy is situated, faces significant challenges with food access, being classified as a concentrated food desert. The area has only one grocery store for every 55,000 to 60,000 residents, compared to one per 10,000 residents in wealthier parts of the city. The Nationals have leveraged their Academy as a community hub, offering direct meal distribution, nutrition education, and a deeply subsidized weekly produce market—the only year-round produce market in Ward 7. These initiatives have been crucial in supporting thousands of residents across the D.C. region.
The Allan H. Selig Award, established in 2010, annually recognizes MLB clubs for their charitable and philanthropic efforts. The winner will be determined by a panel assessing each club's impact on important community needs, with fan votes playing a critical role. Fans can cast their votes through Friday, October 16, at mlb.com/Selig-Award. The Nationals previously won the fan vote in 2024 when they first received the award.
In other sports news, the MLB postseason is in full swing, with the Milwaukee Brewers facing off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS). Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski, known for his stingy pitching during the regular season, had a challenging outing in Game 1 of the NLCS. According to MLB.com, Misiorowski pitched 4 1/3 innings, throwing 94 pitches and departing with the teams tied at 1. Despite the challenges, reliever DL Hall managed to escape a potential threat by inducing a double play from Dodgers' Freddie Freeman.
Fans can catch Game 2 of the NLCS on Monday at 5 p.m. ET, broadcasted on FOX, FS1, FOX Deportes, and FOX One. As the postseason progresses, the excitement continues to build, with teams vying for a spot in the World Series.
