The DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, showcases a lovingly restored 1967 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile from the Ron Sturgeon Collection. This SO42 edition pop-top camper van embodies the spirit of wanderlust and retro joy, blending form, function, and nostalgia. Powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four engine paired with a four-speed manual transaxle, the Campmobile encourages slow travel and memorable journeys.
Originally designed as part of the Westfalia conversion, this camper features a pop-up fiberglass roof for added headroom, louvered vent windows, and a wood roof rack for stowing gear. Practical amenities include an exterior electrical hookup, camp-side awning, picnic set, and vintage Coleman stove. Inside, the Birch plywood interior houses a functional kitchenette with a folding table, spice rack, water pump, and ice box. Tan-patterned cloth and beige vinyl upholstery add vintage warmth, while a children’s hammock stretches across the front for extra sleeping space. Upgrades such as a 2024 steering column replacement and updated wiring ensure road-readiness.
Ron Sturgeon, founder of the museum, notes the cultural significance of these vehicles: “They’re not about getting somewhere fast—they’re about taking the long way and making memories along the route.” The Campmobile is part of a collection of over 200 vehicles and 3,000 toys and artifacts, offering visitors a journey through time and classic engineering. The museum, located at 2550 McMillan Parkway, is open Tuesday–Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with free admission and parking.
