The 43rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) along with industry partners, has announced its winners, showcasing the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and avant-garde creativity. The competition, held alongside the 45th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the 14th Salon de TIME, attracted over 17,000 trade buyers from 115 countries and regions, underscoring its global significance.
This year's competition was divided into Open and Student groups, with themes 'Transcending Time' and 'Contours of the Breeze' respectively. The Open Group challenged designers to translate sensory experiences into abstract timepieces, while the Student Group encouraged capturing the movement of wind. The 130 entries were judged by a panel of industry experts and celebrity guest judge Joey Thye.
The Open Group Champion, 'Tectonic Indeterminacy' by Chan Pak Hei and Yang Tianxu, sponsored by Golden Hawk Manufactory Ltd., drew inspiration from pebble geometry. Its faceted design and integrated crown transform time reading into a tactile experience, pushing the boundaries of conventional watchmaking. First Runner-up 'Channel' by Wong Ting Bong, sponsored by Youngs Watch Company Limited and Po Fai Precision Company Limited, integrates a VU meter scale and pointer, making abstract concepts of time and sound visible. Pang Sze Ngaw's 'Moment of Stillness' earned Second Runner-up, depicting mountain ranges in gold wire and enamel with a relief swallow symbolizing time's passage.
In the Student Group, Yip Yuen Sze, Christine from the Hong Kong Design Institute clinched the Champion with 'Traces of Storm,' featuring cyclone-like patterns and lightning-shaped hands, conveying the courage to break new ground. Tam Hei Yiu's 'Running through the breeze' from Pope Paul VI College took First Runner-up, using hands shaped as a girl, tree, and windmill to depict perseverance. Lo Hoi Pui's 'Carpe Diem' from the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong earned Second Runner-up, inspired by dandelion seeds and a weathervane.
The competition also presented the Made-to-Sell Award to Yip Yuen Sze, Christine, for her design's commercial viability. This design will be produced and launched through the HKTDC's Design Gallery, bridging student creativity with market opportunities.
