American Heart Association Endorses New Dietary Guidelines, Raises Concerns Over Sodium and Red Meat Recommendations

The American Heart Association (AHA) has issued a statement in response to the release of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, welcoming the updated science-based recommendations while expressing concern over potential misinterpretation of certain guidelines. The AHA emphasizes the importance of increasing intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and limiting added sugars, refined grains, highly processed foods, saturated fats, and sugary drinks—aligning with its longstanding dietary guidance.

However, the AHA is concerned that recommendations regarding salt seasoning and red meat consumption could lead consumers to exceed recommended limits for sodium and saturated fats, which are primary drivers of cardiovascular disease. While the guidelines highlight whole-fat dairy, the AHA encourages consumption of low-fat and fat-free dairy products for heart health. The association also urges more scientific research on protein consumption and sources, advising consumers to prioritize plant-based proteins, seafood, and lean meats while limiting high-fat animal products such as red meat, butter, lard, and tallow.

The AHA reiterates its commitment to working with the administration to reduce chronic disease burden, particularly for the next generation. Key priorities include advocating for policies to reduce sugary drink consumption, developing an operational definition of ultraprocessed food building on its recent science advisory, and promoting initiatives such as Health Care by Food and the Periodic Table of Food programs. The AHA plans to release updated guidance later this year to support a science-first roadmap for a healthier America.

The AHA's statement underscores the critical role of healthy eating in preventing and managing chronic disease. By aligning with the new dietary guidelines, the association aims to educate consumers and promote dietary patterns that significantly reduce added sugars and sodium. The full statement and additional resources are available on the AHA’s website.
