The Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant, a cornerstone of Slovakia's energy grid, is set for a comprehensive modernization. International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to undertake this significant project. The plant, located on the Danube River, is the largest hydroelectric facility in Slovakia and contributes approximately 10% of the nation's electricity production, making its reliable operation vital to the country's energy security.
The project entails the thorough renewal and upgrade of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently boasts a total capacity of 720 MW. This modernization is not merely a routine maintenance task; it is a strategic investment aimed at ensuring long-term, sustainable, and reliable electricity generation. The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026, reflecting the scale and importance of the undertaking.
At the heart of the modernization are the eight Kaplan turbine-generator units, which will be progressively refurbished to meet the latest technical standards. The primary objectives are to enhance the plant's efficiency and availability while extending the operational lifespan of its key equipment by at least 30 years. This is a critical upgrade, as many of the plant's components have been in service for decades and are approaching the end of their designed life. By modernizing these units, the project aims to secure the plant's role in Slovakia's energy mix for decades to come.
ANDRITZ's scope of supply is extensive, covering everything from model testing and engineering to manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. The work will involve the modernization of critical turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. Such a comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects of the plant's operation are brought up to modern standards, improving overall performance and reliability.
A key consideration in the execution of this project is the need to maintain the plant's availability during the modernization works. The refurbishment will be carried out sequentially, unit by unit, to minimize the impact on ongoing operations. This approach allows the plant to continue generating electricity while the upgrades are being implemented, thereby reducing the risk of power shortages during the transition period.
