Aquafil's Margin Resilience and Deleveraging Progress Highlight 2Q26 Results

Aquafil Group (ECNL.MI) reported second-quarter 2026 results that underscore the company's improved margin resilience and continued deleveraging, even as raw material and transportation costs surged during the period. Revenue declined 1.0% year-over-year to €135.7 million, with volumes broadly stable, while EBITDA slipped 2.5% to €20.7 million. Crucially, the EBITDA margin held at 15.3%, just shy of the 15.5% margin recorded in 2Q25. This modest decline reflects a timing mismatch between higher input costs and contractual price recovery, not a fundamental deterioration in cost performance. Management has indicated that the majority of the second-quarter cost increase will be recovered through third-quarter pricing, with additional recovery expected in the fourth quarter.

The resilience is particularly noteworthy given the sharp cost escalation. Aquafil's lower fixed cost base and operating efficiencies are supporting margins even before a broader demand recovery. For the first half of 2026, the EBITDA margin expanded to 15.0% from 13.6% in the prior-year period, demonstrating the structural improvements implemented over the past year. The company's balance sheet also continued to strengthen, with net financial position (NFP) improving to €196.9 million from €209.5 million at year-end 2025. NFP/LTM EBITDA improved to 2.64x from 2.89x, reflecting the company's commitment to deleveraging. Management continues to prioritize debt reduction, and further progress could eventually reopen capacity for higher capital expenditures or external growth opportunities.

However, the main execution requirement for the remainder of 2026 is now volume rather than margin recovery. First-grade volumes increased only 0.3% in the first half, a stark contrast to management's full-year objective of approximately 5% growth. This implies a meaningful acceleration in the second half is required to meet annual targets. Management remains confident, reaffirming its annual goals while acknowledging that Europe is the principal area of demand uncertainty. The company's ability to navigate the cost environment has been demonstrated, but the volume trajectory will be critical to watch.

Stonegate Capital Partners, which updated coverage on Aquafil, highlighted these key takeaways in a recent report. The firm noted that Aquafil's improved margin profile and balance-sheet progress provide flexibility heading into 2027. The normal pricing lag is approximately three months, with key North American customers incorporating higher raw-material pricing beginning in August, and additional recovery expected into the fourth quarter. This should help mitigate the impact of the cost increases experienced in the second quarter.

Aquafil's performance in 2Q26 reinforces that the company has successfully reset its cost structure, allowing it to maintain margins despite external pressures. The focus now shifts to volume recovery, which will be essential for achieving the full-year targets. With a stronger balance sheet and operational efficiencies in place, Aquafil is positioned to capitalize on a potential demand uptick, but the near-term outlook remains contingent on European demand trends. Investors will be watching closely to see if the anticipated volume acceleration materializes in the coming quarters.
