Arts Council of Greater Los Angeles Relaunches as Independent Nonprofit with Inaugural Event

The Arts Council of Greater Los Angeles has relaunched as an independent nonprofit organization after 15 years under the Century City Chamber of Commerce. This transition marks a significant shift in the region's cultural landscape, allowing the Council to expand its programming and deepen its impact on the arts community. The move is important because it signals a renewed commitment to fostering an inclusive arts environment and elevating Los Angeles from an entertainment hub to a recognized global arts capital.

As a standalone entity, the Arts Council plans to offer a robust calendar of events designed to engage diverse audiences throughout Los Angeles. The inaugural event, "LA in Motion Now & Next: Reimagining Art, Access and Policy," will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 6 to 9 PM at the Wende Museum in Culver City. The event features a panel discussion with prominent figures including Maya Emsden, Executive Officer of Arts + Community Enrichment at LA Metro; Sarah Cifarelli, LAX Art Program Director; David Pagel of Claremont Graduate University; and moderator Catherine Wagley, a writer and art critic. Admission is free, but seating is limited, and RSVP is required via Eventbrite. A social reception will precede and follow the panel.

The implications of this relaunch extend beyond a simple organizational change. By becoming independent, the Arts Council can more effectively serve as a collaboration hub, connecting artists with patrons and advancing arts access for all. According to Agnes Penot, The Arts Council Chair, "Our vision is to position Los Angeles not only as an entertainment capital, but as a true global arts capital. We aim to celebrate creativity, preserve cultural heritage, and ensure the arts are accessible to everyone through innovative programs and partnerships." This aligns with a broader movement to recognize the cultural and economic value of the arts in Los Angeles, a city already renowned for its entertainment industry.

The event's focus on art, access, and policy underscores the Council's intention to address systemic barriers to arts participation. By bringing together leaders from transportation, airports, academia, and media, the panel will explore how policy and infrastructure can support artistic expression and accessibility. This is particularly relevant as Los Angeles prepares for global events and continues to diversify its cultural offerings.

Sponsors for the relaunch include Kline Academy of Fine Art as Patron Sponsor, with Associate Sponsors such as Art World Appraisals, Athletic Brewing Co., Century City News, KLEOS, QuickTales, and others. The Council's independence is expected to catalyze new partnerships and initiatives, reinforcing LA's status as a vibrant arts destination.
