In a recent interview on Benzinga All Access, Paul Warley, CEO of Ascent Solar Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTI), outlined the company's strategic expansion into the space solar market, emphasizing the unique benefits of its featherweight and flexible CIGS thin-film photovoltaic solutions. “What’s exciting about our product is we’re lighter weight than everybody, we are very flexible, you can roll it up and unroll,” Warley said. “If you want to move a satellite, you move the satellite easier or if you know there is going to be certain space debris coming, you can roll it up to protect the solar. Also, we’re much lighter, so it costs less to put it into space.”
Ascent Solar's technology is based on copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), a thin-film material that allows for flexibility and reduced weight compared to traditional rigid solar panels. This is particularly advantageous in space, where every kilogram of payload adds significant launch costs. The ability to roll up the solar arrays also enables satellites to change orientation more easily or retract panels to avoid damage from space debris, a growing concern for orbital assets.
Warley pointed to the company's manufacturing readiness as a key differentiator from competitors. With over 15 years of experience producing solar solutions, Ascent Solar can tailor arrays to meet specific customer requirements. “We have been making solar solutions for more than 15 years and can make solar arrays that fit whatever the customer needs,” he stated. This long track record may provide confidence to space agencies and satellite manufacturers seeking reliable power sources.
