Beijing Kicks Off 17th Sports Games, Celebrating National Fitness Day and the 'Dual Olympic City' Legacy

On August 8, China's 18th National Fitness Day, the 17th Beijing Sports Games opened at the National Indoor Stadium, marking a significant milestone for the 'Dual Olympic City.' The event, which runs through October, is expected to attract around 35,000 participants, including teenagers, college students, and the general public, setting new records in both participation and the number of events.

The Games balance competitive and mass participation events, featuring traditional disciplines like athletics and swimming alongside emerging sports such as pickleball and breakdancing. This approach reflects Beijing's ongoing integration of sports into the city's fabric. According to the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau, the city boasts 3.27 square metres of sports venue space per capita, and 53.1% of its population regularly participates in physical exercise.

At the opening ceremony, 14 champion athletes trained in Beijing—including Ma Long, Zhang Yining, Ding Ning, Wang Chuqin, Xiao Ruoteng, Teng Haibin, Li Na, Cao Yuan, Zhang Jiaqi, Chang Hao, Yang Ling, Liu Xiaotong, Zhang Zesen, and Zhang Ruiyang—were present to inspire more people to take up sports. Zhang Yining said, 'I am especially grateful to Beijing, where I realised my dreams. I also hope that more children who love sports will hold on to their dreams. Beijing is a place where dreams come true.'

The event's emphasis on mass participation resonates with spectators like Yin Shen, a 20-year-old football enthusiast, who said after watching the ceremony, 'It's great to see so many sports that ordinary people usually play. Sports are actually all around us.' This sentiment underscores the broader significance of the Games: they are not just about elite competition but about making sports accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Beijing's status as the 'Dual Olympic City'—hosting both the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics—has catalyzed a sports culture that permeates daily life. The city has continuously developed sports infrastructure and programs, aiming to foster a healthier and more active population. The 17th Beijing Sports Games exemplify this vision, offering a platform for both seasoned athletes and everyday citizens to engage in physical activity.

As the Games progress, they will showcase a wide array of sports, from traditional to modern, highlighting the diversity and vibrancy of Beijing's sports scene. With record participation and a focus on inclusivity, the 2026 Beijing Sports Games are set to leave a lasting impact on the city's sporting landscape, reinforcing the importance of fitness and well-being in urban life.
