The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal and a leading publication in cardiovascular medicine. Maron, a board-certified cardiologist and renowned researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, will assume leadership effective with today’s issue. His appointment underscores the Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science and precision medicine.
Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led Circulation since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016. Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee, which selected Maron, stated, “Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine. Maron brings extensive editorial experience, having served as a reviewer and editor for numerous journals, including Circulation, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, and JACC. He is senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing in Bethesda, Maryland. His research focuses on mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, and he has co-authored more than 260 scientific publications.
Under Maron’s leadership, Circulation will introduce several new features aimed at enhancing reader engagement and transparency. These include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world clinical practice guidance, graphic abstracts for all research articles, and a Patient’s Corner to present key content to the public. The journal will also implement a streamlined submission process with accelerated review timelines and expanded weekly electronic Table of Contents alerts with brief summaries. Additional upgrades are planned for the first year.
Maron has assembled a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific topic sections: Fundamental Sciences (Joseph C. Wu), Translational Science (Matthew L. Steinhauser), Clinical Cardiology (Jennifer E. Ho and Ryan J. Tedford), Clinical Trials (Adrian F. Hernandez and P. Gabriel Steg), Community Health (Tiffany Powell-Wiley), Population Health (Mercedes Carnethon), Global Cardiovascular Health (Ana Mocumbi), and AI for Process and Science (Thomas M. Maddox). The journal will also be supported by 27 associate and guest editors.
Maron’s appointment signals a continued emphasis on precision medicine and pulmonary vascular disease, areas where he has made significant contributions. He holds six patents and has led projects using AI to automate clinical diagnosis and advance network medicine. His leadership is expected to strengthen Circulation’s role in publishing rigorous, practice-changing science for clinicians and researchers worldwide.
