CICC Global Institute Brings China Economic Dialogue to Southeast Asia Amid Global Rebalancing

BANGKOK — The CICC Global Institute (CGI) convened its 2026 Q4 Macro Forum in Bangkok on October 13, marking the first time the institute's quarterly gathering was held in Southeast Asia. The forum, titled "China's Economy amid Global Rebalancing: New Paradigms and New Industries," assembled experts from the International Monetary Fund, the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, the National University of Singapore, ICBC Standard Bank, Wood Mackenzie, and NSQ Capital. The event was announced via Media OutReach Newswire.

The timing and location carry significance. The forum took place during the week of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, when global economic opportunities and challenges were already under international discussion. By bringing Chinese perspectives to that conversation from a Southeast Asian stage, CGI signaled an intent to deepen engagement with the region and to offer Chinese insights on issues of broad international interest.

Yanliang Miao, Chief Economist and Senior Managing Director of CICC, used his opening remarks and keynote speech to argue that understanding China requires a global rebalancing perspective. He emphasized the dynamism of emerging industries alongside the implications of transitioning from old to new growth engines for jobs, incomes, and demand. Alongside its green and digital transitions, Miao said, China is working toward a growth model supported by higher household incomes and services-led consumption. On the international monetary order, he observed that shifts in the global economy, trade networks, and financial technology are driving evolution toward a more diversified international monetary system. Economic and trade strength do not automatically translate into international currency status, he noted, with institutional credibility and the depth and breadth of financial markets remaining central to understanding both this evolution and the internationalization of the renminbi.

Huimin Wu, Executive Dean of CGI and Deputy Head of Research Department at CICC, pointed to The New Pattern of Dual Circulation, a book jointly published this year by CGI and the CICC Research Department. Wu said China's economy is entering a new stage of development, with trade and outward investment undergoing a paradigm shift while emerging industries become increasingly important drivers of growth in the global economy. These changes, he argued, are both part of and deeply shaped by the broader process of global economic rebalancing, giving rise to a new pattern of interaction between China and the global economy.

The forum featured two thematic dialogues and an evening discussion session. Discussions focused on transformations in China's trade and outward investment and their global implications, as well as prospects for emerging industries such as innovative pharmaceuticals, green energy, and artificial intelligence. CGI described the event as an innovative exploration and an important part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen international exchanges, present China's perspective, and foster deeper understanding of China's economic transformation process. Looking ahead, CGI said it will continue to deepen international engagement and work toward building an international dialogue platform focused on China's economy, contributing to greater mutual trust and consensus.

For global audiences, the forum matters because it reflects a deliberate effort by Chinese financial institutions to shape the narrative around global rebalancing at a moment when trade networks, monetary arrangements, and industrial policy are all in flux. By convening in Bangkok during the IMF and World Bank meetings, CGI positioned Chinese analysis not as a domestic matter but as part of a shared international conversation about how growth, trade, and currency systems are being remade.
