Comfort First Analysis: Two-Thirds of Sanford's Normal Heating Demand Falls After Christmas

As North Carolina enters the heating season, Comfort First Heating & Cooling has released an analysis of the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals showing that about two-thirds of Sanford's normal outdoor-temperature heating demand occurs after Christmas. The study, which examined daily heating-degree-day normals, found that 64.4% of the normal July-June heating demand at the Sanford 8 NE weather station falls between December 26 and June 30, compared with just 19.6% before December (July 1-November 30). That means the after-Christmas period has 3.28 times as much normal heating demand as the before-December period.

The pattern is consistent across the state. Raleigh-Durham International Airport shows a similar split, with 65.5% of its normal heating demand after Christmas and 18.6% before December, a ratio of 3.52. All 48 stations in the qualified panel had a larger after-Christmas share than before-December share, with a median after-Christmas share of 64.9%. The highest share was at Cape Hatteras AP (73.4%), while the lowest was at Mt Mitchell (62.1%).

These findings matter for homeowners because they highlight that the bulk of the heating season lies ahead after the holidays. "Sanford's figures put the seasonal calendar in perspective," said Adam Hagen, general manager at Comfort First Heating & Cooling. "About two-thirds of the normal outdoor-temperature heating demand falls after Christmas. Homeowners can keep that longer view in mind when planning around the holidays, while remembering that the weather in an individual winter can differ from the historical pattern."

The analysis is based on published daily heating-degree-day normals, which measure outdoor temperature with a 65°F base. The study used a fixed July 1-June 30 cycle and included only stations with complete data. The results describe historical climate patterns, not a forecast for any specific winter. As the company notes, the normals are not a measure of household outcomes such as spending, energy use, or equipment performance.

Comfort First Heating & Cooling provides HVAC services in Sanford and the Triangle. The company, founded in 2010, offers heating, cooling, plumbing, indoor air quality, and generator services across North Carolina. More information is available at yourcomfortfirst.com.

For residents planning their heating needs, the analysis suggests that focusing on post-holiday preparedness could be wise. While the holiday season may bring some cold snaps, the data show that the majority of heating demand typically occurs in the latter part of the season. Homeowners may want to schedule maintenance or upgrades before the post-Christmas rush to ensure their systems are ready for the colder months ahead.
