eyeo Raises €40 Million to Commercialize Color-Splitting Sensor Technology

eyeo, a Dutch nanophotonics company, announced today that it has raised €40 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to €55 million. The round was led by Innovation Industries, with participation from existing investors including imec.xpand, Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund, QBIC fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Brabant Development Agency (BOM). The investment will accelerate eyeo's efforts to bring its color-splitting sensor technology to the mass market, addressing what the company calls a fundamental flaw in conventional imaging sensors that has left them 70% blind.

Conventional image sensors rely on color filter arrays that absorb approximately 70% of incoming light, losing critical information before it reaches the pixels. eyeo's nanophotonic approach replaces these filters with a proprietary metasurface that guides photons directly to individual pixels based on their color. This technique, which the company has been developing for seven years, allows the sensor to capture all incoming light, resulting in three times more light sensitivity and native color fidelity under any lighting condition.

The technology is compatible with any CMOS sensor platform and enables sub-0.5-micron pixels, making it suitable for ultra-compact imaging systems where image quality is paramount. Target applications include smartphones, extended reality (XR) devices, smart city infrastructure, and other markets within the $30 billion imaging industry. By eliminating the light loss inherent in traditional Bayer filters, eyeo's sensors can improve performance in low-light environments and reduce the need for larger sensor sizes.

“eyeo is redefining imaging with the world’s most advanced nanophotonic color-splitting technology,” the company stated in its announcement. The funding will support the transition from research and development to production-ready sensors, with the goal of integrating them into commercial devices. The company is headquartered at High Tech Campus Eindhoven in the Netherlands, with a sensor design center in Antwerp, Belgium.

The funding round signals strong investor confidence in deep-tech innovations that address long-standing industry bottlenecks. According to the press release, eyeo’s technology has been validated over years of research, and the Series A capital will be used to scale manufacturing and secure partnerships with sensor manufacturers and device makers. The implications for the imaging market are significant: if eyeo’s sensors achieve widespread adoption, they could enable smaller camera modules with better performance, particularly beneficial for thin smartphones and lightweight XR headsets where space is limited.
