Fusion energy companies Type One Energy and ExoFusion have announced an extension of their partnership aimed at optimizing stellarator designs to achieve commercially viable fusion (CVF) more quickly. The collaboration focuses on maximizing plasma confinement, particularly in the edge region, which is critical for the performance of stellarator fusion devices. By combining ExoFusion's expertise in confinement physics and intellectual property with Type One Energy's leadership in stellarator engineering and science, the partners believe they can significantly accelerate the path to CVF.
Stellarators are a type of fusion reactor that uses twisted magnetic fields to confine plasma, offering inherent stability advantages over tokamaks. However, optimizing confinement, especially at the plasma edge, remains a key challenge. The ongoing work between the two companies aims to address this through advanced simulation and design. According to the announcement, ExoFusion brings specialized knowledge in confinement of novel materials for the first wall, as well as experience from various U.S. Department of Energy grants, including ARPA-E, SCIDAC, FIRE, and INFUSE. Type One Energy contributes its FusionDirect™ development program, which leverages proven advanced manufacturing, modern computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets to build optimized stellarator systems.
"Physics partnerships are crucial to CVF," the companies stated in their full announcement. The collaboration is expected to reduce the timeline to a fusion power plant by focusing on the most challenging aspects of plasma physics. Type One Energy, based in Bellevue, WA, and ExoFusion, based in Austin, TX, have been working together since an earlier partnership, and this extension deepens their commitment to stellarator optimization. The companies emphasize that confinement is key to stellarator optimization and that their combined efforts will address critical physics issues that have historically slowed fusion development.
The announcement highlights that the partnership covers both design and simulation, as well as scientific innovation. ExoFusion's CEO Romi Mahajan noted the importance of collaboration in the fusion industry, though the press release did not include direct quotes. Type One Energy, founded in 2019 and venture-backed since 2023, is led by globally recognized fusion scientists and veteran business leaders.
