A recent survey by G2A.COM, the world's largest marketplace for digital entertainment, highlights that consumer choice is as important as format when purchasing major video game releases. The survey of more than 2,000 G2A.COM users found that preferences for buying a blockbuster title like Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) are nearly evenly split: 38% prefer a digital download, 37% prefer a physical disc, and 25% either have no preference or do not plan to purchase the game. This near parity challenges the assumption that digital distribution is universally preferred and underscores that consumers expect options.
The findings have significant implications for the gaming industry. As digital distribution continues to transform how people access entertainment, the data suggests that a one-size-fits-all approach may not satisfy consumers. In fact, 47% of respondents said they would be less likely to buy a full-priced AAA title at launch if only one purchasing format were available. This indicates that limiting choice could directly impact sales, even for highly anticipated titles. Furthermore, 69% said the ability to resell, trade, or lend games influences their decision to purchase full-priced titles, and 59% said additional physical edition elements like steelbooks or art books could sway their purchase. These factors point to a consumer base that values flexibility and ownership, not just convenience.
The survey also explored the future of physical games. While 34% expect physical games to become a niche collector proposition within five years, and 23% believe physical discs will be nearly phased out for new releases, the majority still express concern about game preservation. In fact, 77% are somewhat concerned about long-term game preservation in an increasingly digital market, with 58% very concerned. This highlights a tension between the convenience of digital and the desire for lasting access.
Interestingly, the respondents were predominantly digital-first consumers: 70% primarily play on PC, an ecosystem where digital distribution has long been the standard. Yet even among this group, choice remains paramount. As Katarzyna Jakubiec, Chief Business Officer at G2A.COM, noted, "GTA VI shows that the games market is entering a new phase of digital maturity. For players, speed and convenience are no longer the only priorities – they also want the freedom to choose and greater control over how they access and use the content they buy." She added that the future of the market is not about one model replacing another, but about giving players the flexibility to choose what works best for them.
The context of GTA VI's immense popularity makes these findings particularly relevant. G2A.COM previously reported a 65-fold increase in traffic to GTA VI-related pages during a surge in June, with July alone accounting for 48% of all such traffic between January and July. The game also became G2A.COM's most wishlisted game in 45 countries. Despite this hype, players still approach purchases pragmatically, weighing factors like flexibility, price, and choice. This reinforces the importance of marketplaces that offer a broad range of options. As Jakubiec explained, "That same principle is at the heart of the marketplace model. G2A.COM brings together a broad range of offers and price points, giving users the freedom to choose the option that best fits their individual needs and preferences."

The survey results suggest that as digital entertainment evolves, the key to success lies not in limiting choice but in expanding it, allowing consumers to decide what delivers the most value for them.
