As public health authorities grapple with the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) is underscoring the potential relevance of its vaccine platform and expertise. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), has already resulted in over 4,300 cases and more than 2,000 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and surrounding regions, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). With no approved vaccine specifically targeting BDBV, the need for effective countermeasures is urgent.
GeoVax, a biotechnology company developing vaccines against infectious diseases and cancers, has extensive experience in creating vaccines for high-consequence hemorrhagic fever viruses using its Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform. The company's portfolio includes candidates targeting Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, and Marburg virus, all of which have shown encouraging protective efficacy in non-human primate lethal-challenge studies.

"We are prepared to engage with WHO, Africa CDC, national public health authorities, and other appropriate organizations to determine whether our vaccine candidates, technology, or scientific expertise could contribute to the response." GeoVax is also willing to make relevant vaccine materials available for evaluation against BDBV.
GeoVax's lead infectious disease priority remains GEO-MVA, an MVA-based vaccine for mpox and smallpox, which is advancing toward a pivotal clinical development program. Notably, portions of this program are expected to be conducted in African regions confronting significant infectious disease challenges, including areas affected by the current Ebola outbreak. The company is already engaging with healthcare and research organizations in the region, which provides a natural opportunity to explore collaborative efforts against Ebola.
"Our relationships in the region are being developed first and foremost to advance GEO-MVA, but many of the organizations with whom we are engaging are simultaneously confronting this Ebola outbreak," Dodd added. "Given our experience, we believe it is appropriate to ask how we might help. Any such effort would be pursued collaboratively while maintaining our operational and capital focus on GEO-MVA."
Beyond GEO-MVA, GeoVax retains a portfolio of MVA-based hemorrhagic fever vaccine candidates that have demonstrated protective efficacy in animal models. The company is open to collaborations, licensing arrangements, and public-private partnerships that could further evaluate and develop these assets without diverting primary resources from GEO-MVA. This broader MVA portfolio provides strategic optionality to address emerging infectious disease threats.
GeoVax's commitment to scalable MVA manufacturing, including a continuous cell-line process, further strengthens its potential to contribute to global health responses.
