GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has welcomed the launch of a global mpox vaccine stockpile, a significant step toward ensuring timely and equitable vaccine access during future outbreaks. The stockpile, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and coordinated by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, was launched on August 27 and is scheduled to begin operations later this month. The initiative, highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in a September 2 announcement, aims to establish a long-term mechanism for global mpox vaccine access and outbreak response.
The establishment of this stockpile addresses persistent barriers to vaccine access that were evident during the 2024 mpox public health emergency. By creating durable procurement infrastructure and ensuring a robust product mix of vaccines, the initiative supports sustainable supply and long-term preparedness. The ICG mechanism, which has been used for decades to coordinate emergency vaccine supplies for epidemic-prone diseases, now includes mpox, providing a framework for international health organizations, donors, and manufacturers to collaborate effectively.
GeoVax, a clinical-stage biotechnology company, is developing GEO-MVA, a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-based vaccine candidate for mpox and smallpox. The company has completed key manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and preclinical milestones, positioning it for a pivotal Phase 3 immune-bridging study planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. This study will compare immune responses generated by GEO-MVA with those from the licensed MVA-BN vaccine, following European Medicines Agency (EMA) Scientific Advice that supports an expedited development pathway.
GeoVax's readiness for the stockpile includes GMP clinical product that has been manufactured and released for use, regulatory alignment with EMA, and progress in CRO engagement and clinical-site identification. Preclinical studies have generated orthopoxvirus-specific immune responses and neutralizing-antibody data that support the immune-bridging strategy. As the stockpile develops, GeoVax believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources can expand supply availability and manufacturing capacity, which is crucial for future outbreak preparedness.

Beyond GEO-MVA, GeoVax is pursuing next-generation MVA technologies to address additional barriers to vaccine access. These include MVA-X, a next-generation vaccine targeting single-dose protection; continuous-cell-line manufacturing for scalable production; and microarray-based delivery technologies that could simplify administration. These innovations align with the goal of ensuring that vaccines can be manufactured at scale and deployed efficiently.
The launch of the global stockpile marks a significant advance in the infrastructure for equitable mpox vaccine access.
