The Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races return this weekend (June 27-28) for their 50th anniversary, with a 13-day festival from June 19 to July 1. Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), the event features over 220 teams from 16 countries and regions competing on Victoria Harbour, alongside cultural performances, a 22-metre traditional wooden dragon boat, and a collaboration with the film Minions & Monsters.
This milestone year also marks the 35th anniversary of both the co-organiser Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association and the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), which announced the relocation of its headquarters back to Hong Kong. The IDBF formalized its incorporation in Hong Kong on April 29, 2026, and has applied for funding under the HKSAR Government's Pilot Scheme to Strengthen the Presence of Hong Kong in Asian and International Sports Associations.
Dr. Peter Lam, Chairman of the HKTB, said the extended festival period and stronger race line-up offer an experience found only in Hong Kong, showcasing the city as the Events Capital of Asia. The races include special 50th Anniversary Fishermen Invitational Cup and Championship events.
Claudio Schermi, President of the IDBF, stated: "Incorporation in Hong Kong is not a conclusion, but a beginning. It anchors our Federation in the city where our international story started." The IDBF's return reinforces Hong Kong's reputation as the birthplace of modern international dragon boat racing and its strengths as a global hub.
Visitors can enjoy intangible cultural heritage performances such as Wing Chun, diabolo, and traditional Chinese instruments, along with live music and themed installations along the Avenue of Stars. The festival concludes on July 1, the 29th anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The Dragon Boat Festival, dating back over 2,000 years, commemorates poet Qu Yuan. Traditional zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) are widely available during the festive period.
