Hong Kong Launches Third InnoHK Research Cluster to Boost Emerging Industries

The launch of SEAM@InnoHK at Hong Kong Science Park marks a strategic move to advance sustainable development, energy, advanced manufacturing, and materials, reinforcing Hong Kong's position as a global innovation hub.

Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), in collaboration with the Innovation and Technology Commission, officially launched the third InnoHK research cluster, SEAM@InnoHK, at Hong Kong Science Park on September 1, 2026. This new cluster focuses on emerging domains such as sustainable development, energy, advanced manufacturing, and materials, and is jointly led by top local and international academic and research institutions.

The launch ceremony was officiated by key government and industry leaders, including Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry; Ms Cordelia Chung, Chairman of HKSTP; and Mr Terry Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, among others. The event gathered representatives from local and overseas universities, international research organizations, and industry partners to witness the unveiling and discuss the R&D roadmap and industrial applications.

SEAM@InnoHK brings together over 30 global universities and research institutions, including the University of Cambridge, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Nagoya University, National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, and Peking University. Notably, three of the eight R&D centres involve collaborations with Nobel Laureates: Professor Ben L. Feringa (2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) at the InnoHK Centre of Functional Materials for Energy and Sustainability (CFMES); Sir Konstantin Novoselov (2010 Nobel Prize in Physics) at the Inno Centre for Heterogeneous Integration and Production (CHIP); and Professor Hiroshi Amano (2014 Nobel Prize in Physics) at InnoHK Power Semiconductors and Applications Center (PowerSAC).

Ms Cordelia Chung highlighted the achievements of the first two clusters, Health@InnoHK and AIR@InnoHK, and reiterated HKSTP's commitment to supporting the new teams. "InnoHK has demonstrated the power of collaboration amongst world eminent scholars, researchers, and global partners," she said. "We commit to provide all the support we can to the InnoHK teams, as your success will add to the heartbeat of the ecosystem—not only for HKSTP, but for Hong Kong's entire innovation landscape."

The eight R&D centres under SEAM@InnoHK are set to address critical challenges in their respective fields. For instance, the InnoHK Centre for Advanced and Smart Manufacturing (CASM) aims to lead global manufacturing toward Industry 5.0 by integrating AI, advanced materials, and digital twins. The InnoHK Centre for Space Manufacturing Technology (CSMT) will establish a world-class hub for space manufacturing research. The InnoHK Hong Kong Center for Renewable Energy and Storage (HKCRES) focuses on developing high-performance perovskite photovoltaics and green hydrogen systems.

The establishment of SEAM@InnoHK is expected to accelerate technology transfer, startup incubation, and the growth of Hong Kong's I&T industry. By fostering cross-border collaboration and assembling world-class research talent, this initiative further solidifies Hong Kong's role as an international I&T hub. As HKSTP enters its next chapter, it continues to deepen impact and create value for innovators, empowering Hong Kong to define what comes next in innovation and growth.
