The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), led a delegation of 20 local innovation and technology companies and institutions to Barcelona, Spain, for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) and its startup-focused event, 4 Years From Now (4YFN) 2026. The participation concluded successfully, enabling local tech firms to access overseas markets and showcase their research and development strengths, reinforcing Hong Kong's role as a leading international I&T hub.
The delegation highlighted Hong Kong's cutting-edge solutions in Connectivity, Devices and Systems, Digital Transformation, and Ecosystem Partners. Through engagements with global industry leaders and investors, the event generated business collaborations, technology co-development, and investment opportunities. Iris Wong, Director of Merchandise Trade and Innovation and Director of External Relations at HKTDC, emphasized Hong Kong's commitment to becoming an international I&T center, leveraging its robust mobile communications infrastructure and expertise in 5G/6G applications and AI integration. The dual-pavilion layout at MWC and 4YFN helped expand business opportunities into European and global markets.
Derek Chim, Head of Startup Ecosystem and Development at HKSTP, noted that the dual-zone presence gave innovators a global stage to validate solutions and gain visibility. HKSTP aims to strengthen the I&T ecosystem and bring Hong Kong's research excellence to Europe. A series of dialogues, networking receptions, themed talks, and pitching sessions attracted enthusiastic responses, highlighting Hong Kong's dynamism as a "super-connector" and "super value-adder" for international companies entering Asian markets.
Visitors to the Hong Kong Tech Pavilion, such as Alejandro Gallego, International Business Director of AMEC, found the pavilion highly inspirational and started conversations for concrete collaboration. Jacobo Pérez-Soba, Manager of the Internationalisation Department at Madrid Chamber of Commerce & Industry, praised the forward-looking solutions and noted interest in upcoming Hong Kong tech events. As 2026 marks the start of China's 15th Five-Year Plan, with technological innovation as a national priority, HKTDC and HKSTP will continue supporting local tech firms in "going global" through the Hong Kong Tech Pavilion, fostering new quality productive forces.
