JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM)) has technically deployed its JPM Coin deposit token on the Ethereum mainnet, enabling eligible institutional clients to transfer funds within seconds, around the clock. The token represents U.S. dollar deposits held at JPMorgan, according to an Oct. 19 report by Ezra Reguerra and Yohan Yun of Cointelegraph.
The move matters because it places a tokenized claim on the largest U.S. bank's balance sheet onto the world's most widely used public smart-contract network. Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, said crypto companies could use the token for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral. That dual use case signals that JPM Coin is being positioned not merely as an internal ledger tool but as a settlement asset capable of interacting with broader digital-asset markets.
Landriault said Ethereum was selected for its liquidity and existing use among clients, while JPM Coin transactions will remain restricted to approved institutional participants. The permissioned approach is significant: it allows JPMorgan to harness public blockchain rails without exposing the token to unrestricted secondary trading or anonymous holders, a structure that could serve as a template for other regulated deposit tokens.
The expansion follows the November 2025 launch of JPM Coin on Coinbase's Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain. JPMorgan also announced plans in January 2026 to introduce the token on the Canton Network, extending its support for institutional payments and asset settlement across multiple blockchain networks. The multi-chain strategy suggests the bank is hedging against fragmentation in tokenized finance rather than betting on a single ledger, and it could pressure competitors to clarify their own interoperability roadmaps.
For the broader market, the deployment lends credibility to the thesis that tokenized deposits—rather than stablecoins alone—will carry institutional cash flows on-chain.
