Kevin McManus Law has announced Aubrey Schwartze as the recipient of the 2025 Kevin McManus Overcoming Adversity Through Sports Scholarship. The $2,000 award recognizes Schwartze for her academic excellence, dedication to athletics, and ability to overcome both physical injuries and emotional setbacks, as detailed in her personal essay.
Schwartze, a senior at Vienna High School, made school history by becoming the first student to score 1,500 career points and record 1,000 career rebounds in basketball. Her essay traces her lifelong connection to basketball, beginning in childhood while growing up in the gym alongside her father, a high school basketball coach. She recounts injuries, recovery processes, and mental hurdles, drawing inspiration from a childhood song in Barbie: A Princess and the Pauper to reflect on how adversity shaped her character.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Schwartze demonstrates leadership by coaching a fourth-grade girls' basketball team. She serves as president of her school's National Honor Society chapter and Senior Class President, volunteers at blood drives and the local food pantry, and organizes the annual Veterans' Day assembly. Academically, she plans to attend the University of Central Missouri to pursue a degree in radiologic technology, with hopes of working in a sports injury and medicine clinic to help athletes recover and return to their sports.
