City officials and community leaders gathered at L. Ron Hubbard Park in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on December 5, 2025, to celebrate the completion of significant renovations and rededicate the park in honor of the 75th anniversary of the book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. The event featured remarks from Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, members of the city council, Jennifer Costa of the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce, and Rev. Massimo Parrino of the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation.
The park, located at the corner of North Broad Street and Salem Avenue, holds historical significance as the birthplace of the global Dianetics movement. Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health debuted on May 9, 1950, and spent 28 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, leading to the establishment of the first Dianetics Foundation in L. Ron Hubbard's home on Aberdeen Road. The book has since sold over 20 million copies and is available in 50 languages across 206 nations.
Renovations were made possible through a partnership between the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, city departments, and community organizations. The L. Ron Hubbard Foundation sponsored the replacement of the worn park front, installation of new pavers, and restoration of the 16-foot-tall clock and plaque that have been a city landmark for 25 years. Groundwork Elizabeth contributed by planting rosebushes and azaleas, while the City of Elizabeth planted new trees to enhance the environment.
Mayor Bollwage commended the collaborative effort, emphasizing the value of community engagement. Jennifer Costa noted that the park and its historic clock serve as a global destination meeting point, inspiring residents and travelers alike. Rev. Parrino described the renovations as the start of a larger project to renew the park, stating, "Working together with the City of Elizabeth, great organizations such as Groundwork Elizabeth, many wonderful friends and neighbors – we not only commemorate the history of this park, but celebrate its renovation and what it represents: the power of community, the spirit of service, and the enduring belief that we can make the world around us better through care, commitment, and cooperation."
The celebration concluded with an official ribbon cutting led by the mayor, Jennifer Costa, city council members, and representatives from the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation. Future improvements include additional plantings and walking paths. The L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, a nonprofit organization, continues to preserve L. Ron Hubbard's legacy and encourage the application of his discoveries to address social and scientific challenges.
