LION E-Mobility Expands BESS Business with Key Hires to Drive European Energy Storage Growth

LION E-Mobility Group is accelerating the expansion of its stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) business with the addition of two senior experts. Winfried Wahl, a veteran with over 18 years in photovoltaic and energy storage markets, will serve as Head of BESS Strategy. Sebastian Bujnoch, who brings 16 years of experience in Asian manufacturing and supply chains, will focus on business and sales development. The appointments underscore the strategic importance of BESS as a growth pillar for LION Smart, a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG.

Stationary energy storage is critical for integrating renewable energy, stabilizing power grids, and enabling future-proof energy systems. Wahl, an electrical engineer from RWTH Aachen University, has expertise across the entire value chain—from technology positioning to market entry and regulatory compliance. He previously shaped European market entries for companies like Hithium and LONGi, contributed to BNEF Tier 1 listings, and worked on reinsurance eligibility through Munich Re. He also co-authored the IEA World Energy Outlook Special Report 2024 and serves on PV Magazine's jury. At LION Smart, he will refine strategic positioning, develop competitive product models, and expand partnerships.

Bujnoch complements the team with international leadership in manufacturing, operations, and the battery sector. His deep insights into Chinese and Asian industrial scaling, supply chain structures, and cross-border collaboration are highly relevant for technology-driven markets. He will focus on strengthening strategic relationships with Chinese suppliers and broadening LION Smart's customer portfolio in Europe.

“With Winfried Wahl and Sebastian Bujnoch, we are gaining two individuals who combine strategic market insight, international experience, and operational execution capabilities in an ideal way,” said Dr. Joachim Damasky, CEO of LION E-Mobility AG. “Their expertise will play an important role in systematically building our BESS business and positioning LION Smart as a strong partner in the European energy storage market.”

LION Smart, based in Garching, Germany, already offers a 5 MWh container solution and immersion-cooled battery technology. The company operates highly automated module assembly lines and aims to develop scalable, market-oriented storage solutions to support the energy transition.
