The biggest story in space this year did not happen in orbit. On June 12, 2026, SpaceX completed the largest initial public offering in history, pricing at $135 per share and debuting at a valuation approaching $1.8 trillion. For the first time, everyday investors could buy a direct stake in the company that drove launch costs lower and reshaped the economics of space.
Yet most of the sector's frontier companies remain private and out of reach for public investors. Closing that gap is the strategy behind Planet Ventures Inc. One of those portfolio companies recently achieved a milestone that highlights the next frontier: not just launching satellites, but managing them efficiently.
Antaris, a software-defined space infrastructure company backed by Planet Ventures, signed a memorandum of agreement with Transcelestial to develop and flight-test a combined surveillance and optical-communications architecture on its JANUS-2 mission in late 2026. This mission aims to demonstrate how satellites can both observe Earth and communicate via laser links, reducing the need for multiple spacecraft and enabling more responsive operations.
"The ability to reconfigure satellites in orbit through software, rather than hardware, is a game-changer for the industry," said a spokesperson from Antaris. The partnership with Transcelestial adds an optical communication layer that could enable high-bandwidth data transfer without relying on traditional radio frequencies, which are increasingly congested.
Planet Ventures gives public-market investors exposure to private space companies such as Antaris, Relativity Space, and General Astronautics that are typically accessible only to venture and institutional capital. Relativity Space is known for its 3D-printed rockets, while General Astronautics focuses on in-space transportation and infrastructure.
The global space economy is projected to grow significantly over the next decade, driven by declining launch costs and increasing demand for satellite services such as communications, Earth observation, and navigation. However, investing in private space companies has traditionally required large minimum investments and long lock-up periods. Planet Ventures aims to democratize access by pooling capital and investing in a diversified portfolio of early-stage space ventures.
"Space is no longer the exclusive domain of governments and billionaires," noted a market analyst. "With vehicles like Planet Ventures, retail investors can participate in the growth of companies that are building the infrastructure for the next generation of space activities."
The JANUS-2 mission is expected to test key technologies that could reduce the cost and complexity of satellite constellations. Software-defined satellites can be updated and repurposed after launch, extending their useful life and adapting to changing mission requirements. Optical communications offer higher data rates and lower latency than radio, which is critical for applications such as real-time Earth observation and autonomous operations.
As the space sector matures, the focus is shifting from simply getting to orbit to managing assets once they are there. Planet Ventures and its portfolio companies are positioning themselves to capitalize on this trend, offering investors a way to bet on the future of in-orbit operations.
