Researchers Develop Safer, More Effective Immunotherapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Scientists at the University of North Carolina have developed a novel immunotherapy that targets acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with greater precision and fewer side effects than current treatments. The research, published in the journal Blood, demonstrates how engineered immune cells can eliminate cancerous cells while leaving healthy blood tissue unharmed, addressing a major challenge in AML therapy.

Immunologist Gianpietro Dotti and hematologist Paul Armistead led the research teams that created these modified immune cells. Their approach overcomes the limitation of standard treatments, which often struggle to distinguish between cancerous and normal cells, leading to toxic side effects. The new method offers hope for patients with AML, a deadly blood cancer that has limited treatment options, especially for older adults or those with relapsed disease.

The engineered cells, known as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, are designed to recognize a specific protein found on AML cells but not on healthy blood stem cells. This selectivity reduces the risk of damaging the bone marrow, a common complication of existing therapies. In preclinical models, the treatment effectively eradicated leukemia cells while preserving normal blood cell production.

This advancement could pave the way for safer and more effective cancer therapies.
