SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect Launches 10-Day Heritage Tour to Sierra Leone, Blending Cultural Roots, Diaspora Investment, Documentary Filming, and Independence Day Celebration: April 22 - May 1, 2026

SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect (SADC) has announced its 10-day Heritage & Legacy Tour to Sierra Leone, scheduled for April 22 through May 1, 2026. Limited to just 30 participants, the tour aims to bridge the African Diaspora with Sierra Leonean roots through a blend of cultural immersion, business opportunities, and community development. The itinerary includes a business expo, a major fundraising effort, a landmark artifact dedication, documentary filming, and participation in Sierra Leone's 65th Independence Day celebration.

Rooted in the shared history of the Gullah Geechee people, whose ancestors were taken from Sierra Leone's rice-growing regions to the coastal Carolinas, Georgia, and various Caribbean destinations, the tour strengthens historical, agricultural, and cultural ties across the Atlantic. The journey will include a solemn remembrance at the ruins of Bunce Island as well as moments of relaxation at Mozza Beach.

Hosted at Fourah Bay College, the Business Expo & Diaspora Investment Exchange will connect global entrepreneurs with Sierra Leonean innovators, educators, and business leaders. This aligns with Sierra Leone's national tourism strategy; Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Tunis, declared 2025 the 'Year of Ecotourism,' stating: 'Once known as the Athens of Africa, Sierra Leone is reclaiming its rightful place on the global stage this time using tourism, culture, and conservation as its springboard.' The Expo encourages investment in agriculture, technology, tourism, and cultural industries, echoing the entrepreneurial legacy of ancestors who brought rice cultivation expertise to America.

Each participant will directly contribute to infrastructure improvements on Tasso Island, home to more than 5,500 residents. Funds raised will support clean water, solar power, sanitation, educational upgrades, and internet connectivity. Those unable to join the tour can make tax-deductible contributions to support Tasso Island via the organization's website at www.sierrafricanetwork.com.

The tour will feature a landmark dedication ceremony in Freetown for artifacts that will be permanently installed at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (HMFP) in Hilton Head, South Carolina—the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved Africans in the U.S. This installation symbolizes a spiritual homecoming for the African American community. These events will be captured in the documentary Bridging Freedom, which explores the cultural continuum between Sierra Leone and the Gullah Geechee corridor from North Carolina to Florida.

Participants will join national celebrations on April 27 for Sierra Leone's 65th Independence Day, experiencing vibrant culture, musical traditions, and expressions of freedom that resonate deeply with Gullah Geechee communities. Curated by SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect, an international collaboration of leaders from the U.S., U.K., and Sierra Leone, the tour offers a rare cross-continental experience. Executive Director Marva Goldsmith shares: 'This is a historic journey of heritage, entrepreneurship, and renewal—where Gullah Geechee legacy meets Sierra Leone's living history, and the past inspires a powerful future on both sides of the Atlantic.'

Participation is limited to 30 travelers. A $300 tax-deductible deposit secures a spot and contributes to life-affirming projects for Tasso Island. Full itinerary, pricing, and registration details are available at www.sierrafricanetwork.com.
