SoulfulDate has released findings from a voluntary survey of approximately 2,300 platform members on their use of Icebreakers, a feature that provides pre-written conversation starters. The survey, conducted from April to June 2026, reveals a nearly even split between users who send the default template unchanged and those who customize it before sending. The results offer insight into a central tension in digital communication: the balance between efficiency and personalization.
According to the survey, 52% of respondents used the template without any modification, while 41% modified it before sending. The remaining 7% said their approach varies depending on the profile they are contacting. Among those who use the default template, 36% said it feels sufficient to start a conversation, 33% cited time savings, 19% were unsure what to write, and 12% said the template already expressed what they would have written. Notably, the survey notes that research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking found that individuals with higher social anxiety are less likely to initiate contact in online environments, even when ready-made tools are available.
The data also shows a correlation between reach and efficiency. Users who typically select the maximum of five recipients per session are 16 percentage points more likely to use the default template than the overall average (68% vs. 52%). This suggests that those aiming for broader outreach prioritize efficiency over personalization. In contrast, among those who customize their Icebreakers, 54% do so to make the message feel more personal, 23% want to reference something specific from the recipient's profile, 15% feel more comfortable sending something self-written, and 8% are dissatisfied with the default tone.
Overall, 76% of respondents described their post-send experience as confident or neutral, indicating that Icebreakers serve as a low-friction entry point for initiating conversations. A SoulfulDate product team representative commented, “The split we see in how SoulfulDate members use Icebreakers reflects something broader about how people approach a first message. Some members value the speed and simplicity of a ready-made prompt. Others want to say something that feels specific to the person they are reaching out to. Understanding the difference between those two groups and what each of them needs shapes how we think about the feature going forward.”
The survey was opt-in and collected no personally identifiable information. All respondents were registered, active SoulfulDate members who had used Icebreakers at least once. No demographic data was collected beyond age eligibility (18+) and prior feature use. As such, the results reflect the behaviors of engaged users and may not represent the broader membership.
