Stonegate Capital Partners Initiates Coverage on Yum! Brands, Highlighting Shift to Taco Bell and KFC Growth

Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), offering insights into the company's evolving business model following the Pizza Hut divestiture. The research highlights that Yum!'s second-quarter 2026 results underscore a portfolio increasingly driven by Taco Bell's U.S. growth and KFC's international development runway. Excluding Pizza Hut, system sales increased 7%, units grew 6%, same-store sales rose 4%, and core operating profit advanced 8%.

The report notes that a July food safety issue at Taco Bell creates a near-term interruption, but Stonegate views the impact as temporary. Sales trends have improved from the July 18 low, online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, and brand-love measures remain intact. This resilience is seen as a positive indicator for the company's long-term prospects.

KFC is identified as the largest long-term development opportunity, supported by attractive franchisee economics and significant international whitespace. In the second quarter, KFC opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets, grew units by 7%, and continues to target higher average unit volumes and same-store sales. Stonegate estimates there is an approximate 20,000-unit whitespace opportunity for KFC globally.

The Pizza Hut divestiture is expected to leave Yum! Brands increasingly concentrated around its higher-growth, predominantly franchised KFC and Taco Bell businesses. The transaction is projected to provide approximately $2.3 billion in aggregate net proceeds, which Stonegate anticipates will be used for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases, complementing continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio.

According to the announcement, the second-quarter results reinforce the broader operating model, with stronger restaurant-level performance supporting franchisee returns, faster unit development, and growth in Yum!'s recurring royalty base. This model is central to the company's ability to generate consistent, high-quality earnings.
