Taiwan entrepreneur's smart elderly care venture taps into China's growing silver economy

A smart elderly care company based in Tianjin is capitalizing on China's expanding silver economy by introducing advanced technologies and a community-embedded model, drawing on Taiwan's long-term care expertise. Time Light Care has developed a proprietary smart elderly care management platform that integrates millimeter-wave radar monitors for completely bedridden residents, tracking breathing, pulse, and heartbeat in real time. Any abnormality triggers automatic alerts to caregivers' phones, enhancing safety and response times.

The company operates nursing homes described as 'community-embedded, small-to-medium scale, high-quality care' facilities, allowing seniors to remain in familiar surroundings close to their families. Additionally, Time Light Care has introduced accessible vehicles equipped with detachable automatic wheelchairs that go directly to the bedside, helping 'suspended seniors'—those who struggle to go downstairs due to lack of elevators—to go out with dignity.

These innovations come as China's elderly population aged 60 and above reached 320 million by the end of 2025, a figure projected to exceed 400 million by 2035. The silver economy is expected to surpass 30 trillion yuan (about $4.41 trillion), according to industry estimates. In February 2026, an executive meeting of the State Council proposed measures to expand and improve inclusive elderly care service supply, aiming for a tiered, categorized, accessible, and sustainable system that meets diverse needs.

'The mainland's policy support and market scale have created immense opportunities for innovation in senior care,' said Jing Ran, the company's representative, in an interview with China News Service. 'Having succeeded in starting our business here, we now hope to encourage more young people from Taiwan to come, explore, and develop their careers on the mainland.'

Time Light Care's approach reflects a broader trend of cross-strait collaboration in the elder care sector, leveraging technological advances to address the challenges of an aging society. The company's smart platform and tailored services demonstrate how private enterprises can contribute to the government's goal of building a sustainable elderly care system.
