The Italian Barrel Wins Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2026

The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant located at 1240 Decatur Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. This award, part of Wine Spectator's 2026 Restaurant Awards, recognizes restaurants that demonstrate a strong commitment to wine through well-curated lists and exceptional service. The Italian Barrel's wine program, which features at least 75 selections with a thematic match to its menu, has earned this prestigious recognition.

Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator, commented on the evolving restaurant industry, stating, "The restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs." He congratulated the 4,012 restaurants that earned a Restaurant Award this year, including The Italian Barrel.

Co-owners Lori and Kevin Cates expressed their gratitude, saying, "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course. This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."

Established in 1981, the Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards are a hallmark of excellence in wine service, with three tiers: Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence, and Grand Award. The Italian Barrel has earned the Award of Excellence, which requires a wine list of at least 75 selections featuring quality producers and a cohesive match to the menu in price and style.

Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026. The full list of winners can be explored at WineSpectator.com/Restaurants, where users can search by name, location, award level, cuisine, wine specialties, and pricing. Winners are also profiled in the free Restaurant Awards app for iPhone and iPad.

The Italian Barrel, founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and now operated by Lori and Kevin Cates, focuses on seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients, all complemented by a deeply Italian wine program. The restaurant offers indoor and heated outdoor seating, inviting guests to slow down and enjoy a meal designed to linger.
