Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) announced that its 50/50 joint venture, Ambler Metals LLC, has submitted a Clean Water Act Section 404 application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, initiating federal permitting for the Arctic Project in Alaska's Ambler Mining District. This high-grade copper project, with an average grade of approximately 5% copper equivalent, is also expected to pursue FAST-41 program coverage to streamline permitting timelines as the company advances engineering, environmental work, and field activities in support of a future investment decision.
The submission marks a pivotal milestone for the Arctic Project, which is part of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. The Ambler Mining District is recognized as one of the richest and most prospective copper-dominant districts globally, hosting polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. The exploration focus has been on two deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both situated within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.
Trilogy Metals holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals LLC, with South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, holding the other 50 percent after exercising its option to form the joint venture in December 2019. Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, which provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy Metals' vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.
The FAST-41 program, established under Title 41 of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act, is designed to improve the coordination and efficiency of federal environmental reviews and permitting processes for major infrastructure projects. By seeking FAST-41 coverage, Ambler Metals aims to reduce permitting timelines, which is critical for advancing the project toward a final investment decision. The company is concurrently progressing engineering studies, environmental baseline data collection, and field activities to support the permitting process.
The Arctic Project's high-grade copper content positions it as a strategically important asset for domestic copper supply, particularly as demand for copper grows due to its use in electrical wiring, renewable energy systems, and electric vehicles. The development of this project could contribute to reducing reliance on imported copper and support the transition to a low-carbon economy. Trilogy Metals continues to focus on advancing the Arctic Project through the permitting phase, with the goal of making a future investment decision. The company's progress underscores the potential of the Ambler Mining District to become a significant source of critical minerals in North America.
