Trilogy Metals Secures $35.6M U.S. Government Investment for Alaska Copper Projects

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has taken a major step forward in advancing its copper-focused projects in Alaska by executing definitive agreements for a $35.6 million strategic equity investment from the U.S. Department of War. The investment, which was previously announced, will be used to support exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. This move highlights the growing importance of domestic critical mineral production for national security and clean energy transition.

Under the terms of the agreements, the U.S. Department of War will invest approximately $17.8 million directly in Trilogy Metals and an additional $17.8 million through a transaction with joint venture partner South32 Limited (ASX, LSE, JSE: S32; ADR: SOUHY). The proceeds from both investments are committed to the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects. Upon completion, the department is expected to hold approximately 10% of Trilogy Metals on a non-diluted basis. The transaction is expected to close in September 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.

The investment is a significant endorsement of the strategic value of the UKMP, which is located within the Ambler Mining District, one of the world's richest and most prospective copper-dominant districts. The district hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Trilogy Metals holds a 50% interest in Ambler Metals LLC, which owns a 100% interest in the UKMP. In December 2019, South32 exercised its option to form a 50/50 joint venture with Trilogy Metals, bringing together two companies with a shared vision for developing the district.

Exploration efforts have focused on two key deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit. These deposits are situated within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares. Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, which provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. This agreement underscores the company's commitment to responsible development that respects subsistence livelihoods.

The U.S. government's investment comes at a time when the nation is seeking to reduce its reliance on foreign sources of critical minerals, particularly copper, which is essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and national defense applications. By backing domestic projects like the UKMP, the government aims to bolster supply chain security and support the transition to a clean energy economy. For Trilogy Metals, this investment not only provides crucial funding but also validates the strategic importance of its assets. It may also help de-risk the project, making it more attractive to future partners and investors. As the transaction progresses toward its expected September 2026 closing, stakeholders will be watching closely for further milestones in the development of this potentially significant copper resource.
