As extreme cold continues and near-record low temperatures are expected later this week, UGI Utilities, Inc. is reminding customers to prioritize safety and be prepared for potential cold-weather impacts. The natural gas and electric utility company, which serves more than 760,000 customers, is offering guidance on how to stay warm while avoiding hazards such as carbon monoxide poisoning and frozen pipes.
UGI recommends that customers keep their homes at a consistent temperature to prevent pipes from freezing. Opening cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing can also help. Additionally, using space heaters safely is critical: they should be placed on a level, non-flammable surface at least three feet away from curtains, bedding, and other flammable materials. Customers are advised never to use stoves or ovens for heating, as this can lead to carbon monoxide buildup.
In conjunction with cold safety, UGI is also raising awareness about scams targeting utility customers. Scammers often pose as utility representatives, demanding immediate payment or threatening service disconnection. UGI emphasizes that it never requests payment via prepaid debit cards, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Customers who receive suspicious calls should hang up and contact UGI directly at the customer service number on their bill.
