Utopai Studios Scales AI-Native Film and TV Production with 2027 Slate

Utopai Studios launched in August 2025 with a proposition that went beyond the short-form experiments and technical demonstrations then dominating generative AI in entertainment: build an entire film and television studio for the AI era. Just over a year later, Variety described it as the world's largest independent AI-native film and television studio, and Forbes estimated its valuation at $1 billion. The company now has 25 original projects in development or production and has set three feature films and two series for 2027, a slate that will serve as the clearest test yet of whether AI-native production can deliver finished, audience-ready entertainment rather than isolated clips.

That distinction matters because much of the first wave of generative AI in entertainment was defined by individual scenes and technical demos. Utopai Studios has instead built infrastructure to develop, finance, produce and distribute long-form storytelling. The company says AI-native does not mean handing creative decisions to technology; it means integrating AI into production infrastructure from the start while filmmakers and artists retain control over story, style, performance and final cuts. At the center is PAI, a cinematic storytelling system that can support visual development, scene planning, continuity, video generation, editing and localization alongside established filmmaking tools.

Led by CEO and co-founder Cecilia Shen and co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Jie Yang, Utopai Studios is applying its model through partnerships with established entertainment companies. Its customers and collaborators include Huace Film & TV Co., Ltd. in China and DeNA Co., Ltd. in Japan. In April, the company announced a partnership with Huace, which owns one of the world's largest television IP libraries, to support long-form storytelling, content development and global localization, including the animated series "Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years." Utopai Studios is developing more than 18 original projects in Asia.

The 2027 lineup is deliberately varied, showing that AI-native production is not a single visual style. "Half Moon," written and directed by Hyo-joo Yang, is a live-action feature presented by Utopai Studios, Germany's In Good Company and Korea's Paper Barn Studios. Principal photography began in Germany in August 2026, with PAI supporting select visual elements while the film remains grounded in live-action performances and director-led craft. "Cortés," a historical epic set in 1519, is a Marco Weber Production written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan and directed by Paul Mignot, with shooting planned for Spain and a wide theatrical release in 2027. Utopai Studios will use AI-enabled tools to help overcome the scale and cost limitations that previously kept the project from the screen.

"The Most Serious Fart," based on Mike Bender and Chuck Dillon's 2023 children's book, will be written and directed by Bender as an animated feature, with traditional craft and artists central and AI used within a human-led process. The eight-episode sci-fi series "Space Nation," produced by Ex Machina Studios, is one of the first AI productions picked up by a traditional buyer, including Brazil's Globoplay, and is co-produced by Utopai Studios and Globoplay. "Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years," developed with Huace, takes a more fully AI-generated animation approach and is being produced for broadcast, streaming and digital distribution, with Utopai Studios controlling rights outside China.

Utopai Studios has also extended its ecosystem through sports and creator partnerships, including an investment from Carmelo Anthony through Creative 7 Productions and a collaboration with James Harden on an animated short. The 2027 slate will be the company's most important proof point. At a moment when debate around generative AI has focused on what the technology might eventually do, Utopai Studios is betting that the next phase will be defined by finished films and series: human-led, built for audiences and ambitious enough to stand on their own as entertainment.
