The Diputación de Valencia has granted a subsidy to the Cultural Association El Camino del Santo Grial to promote the Way of the Holy Grail as a strategic cultural and tourist resource for the province. The aid, approved by Presidential Decree No. 13616 on November 7, 2025, aims to consolidate and position Valencian municipalities within the European Cultural Route 'The Way of the Holy Grail, Route of Knowledge, Path of Peace.' The grant is part of the Annex of Nominative Subsidies in the 2025 provincial budget.
Deputy for Tourism Pedro Cuesta emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that connect heritage, identity, European culture, and sustainable tourism development, promoting territorial cohesion and the province's external projection. The funded actions focus on promotion, communication, dissemination, and territorial consolidation of the route, reinforcing the presence of Valencian municipalities in this cultural itinerary that articulates history, scientific research, spirituality, and cultural tourism.
The Way of the Holy Grail offers significant future advantages for the province of Valencia. It positions Valencia as the epicenter and culmination of the route, as its Cathedral houses the Holy Chalice, venerated as the Holy Grail. This unique status enhances international visibility within European cultural networks. The route also fosters territorial structuring and cohesion by integrating municipalities large and small into a shared cultural narrative, promoting inter-municipal cooperation and territorial balance.
The itinerary promotes a model of cultural, spiritual, and regenerative tourism, complementing traditional tourism and attracting visitors year-round. It activates historical, religious, landscape, and ethnographic heritage resources along the route, from the Palancia valley to the orchard and coast. Local economic development is spurred through accommodations, restaurants, cultural guides, local products, crafts, and educational activities. The route strengthens European values of peace, knowledge, and cultural dialogue, aligning with European cultural policies and sustainable development goals.
The consolidation of the Valencian section strengthens the candidacy of the Holy Grail Route within the Council of Europe's Cultural Routes Programme, opening opportunities for institutional, academic, and tourism cooperation internationally. The subsidy will be paid in a single installment after justification of expenses, ensuring transparency and good management of public resources.
The route passes through 18 municipalities in the province of Valencia, including Algimia de Alfara, Torres Torres, Algar de Palancia, Albalat dels Naranjos, Estivella, Sagunto, Port of Sagunto, Puçol, El Puig de Santa Maria, The Town of Farnals, Massamagrell, Emperador, Albalat dels Sorells, Meliana, Almàssera, Tavernes Blanques, Alboraya, and Valencia. Each municipality offers unique heritage and cultural assets, from medieval castles and Arab baths to Roman theaters and the Cathedral of the Holy Chalice. For instance, Sagunto features a Roman theater and castle, while El Puig de Santa Maria houses the Royal Monastery, a National Monument. Emperador, the smallest municipality, is known for its handcrafted route signage and pilgrim welcome center.
