Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving 99.8% iodine purity and over 90% recovery in laboratory tests using real oilfield brine. This development is a crucial step toward establishing a domestic iodine supply for the North American radiology contrast media market, addressing a critical need for supply chain security in medical imaging.
The Mueller process is designed to recover high-purity iodine from iodine-rich oilfield brine, offering oil and gas producers and midstream water operators a new way to generate value from produced water. Voyageur has established a laboratory and fabrication site in Houston, Texas, where the process has been validated under controlled conditions. The company has also constructed a mobile, field-capable pilot unit sized to handle 80,000 liters per day, with field testing scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. This transition from bench-scale validation to real-world operation is pivotal for commercial deployment.
Key laboratory achievements include continuous operation using real oilfield brine, generation of clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, and validation of process parameters supporting scale-up. The company has completed a preliminary design basis for a 200 metric ton per year plant and conducted techno-economic and environmental assessments that indicate a low-cost operational profile. These results underscore the potential for the Mueller process to transform produced brine from a disposal burden into a valuable resource.
For oil and gas operators and investors, this innovation addresses a significant opportunity: billions of barrels of produced water are handled annually at considerable cost, yet only a small fraction of the iodine they contain is recovered. Voyageur aims to be the first to economically extract iodine at field scale, aligning with broader industry efforts toward brine valorization. The company's vertically integrated strategy includes developing iodine production capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes per year to support its future contrast pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The field pilot will provide operating data under real conditions, supporting the design of modular, relocatable production units that can be deployed at saltwater disposal sites. Iodine concentrate would be transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging. Engineering work is progressing through front-end loading stages to refine cost estimates and commercial deployment plans.
Voyageur's broader strategy includes the Frances Creek barium project and planned manufacturing capabilities, aiming to become the first vertically integrated company in the radiology contrast media drug market.
