FEMA maps also have an age problem. Many were drawn decades ago and have not been updated to reflect changes in land development, drainage infrastructure, or the more intense rainfall patterns the country has seen in recent years. The consequences of misplaced confidence in FEMA flood maps played out in devastating detail during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Approximately 150,000 homes in the Houston area flooded.
