The 2026 Duisburg China Festival commenced on Friday afternoon in Duisburg, Germany, with participation from various Chinese and German cities. The three-day event aims to strengthen bilateral ties, featuring cultural booths and interactive zones that display traditional Chinese cuisine, culture, and contemporary art.
A highlight of the festival was the opening gala on Friday evening, performed by nearly 40 artists from Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei Province. The troupe presented more than a dozen programs, including Peking opera, Hanju opera, Chuju opera, acrobatics, and ethnic song and dance, showcasing the city's rich cultural heritage.
Chang Haitao, acting consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Dusseldorf, called the festival "a vivid expression of exchange between China and Germany," providing Germans with an up-close experience of Chinese culture. The event also underscores the deep bond between Duisburg and Wuhan, which became sister cities in 1982—the first such partnership between Germany and China. Since then, the two cities have maintained close people-to-people and economic exchanges.
Duisburg Mayor Soeren Link, who was impressed by the performance, described the gala as "unforgettable for its standard, quality, richness, and the many different facets it presented." He reiterated Duisburg's commitment to its sister-city relationship with Wuhan, expressing hope to strengthen German-Chinese friendship and dialogue further.
Markus Teuber, commissioner for China affairs at the Mayor's Office of Duisburg, noted that the variety of theatrical, song, and dance performances offered German audiences an excellent window into Chinese culture. He expressed optimism about deepening cultural exchanges between the two cities in the future.
For Yang Jing, deputy director of the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Wuhan's presence at the festival "marks an important step in Wuhan culture's global outreach." The event also serves as an annual signature cultural occasion for Duisburg, injecting grassroots momentum into German-Chinese friendship.
The festival's significance extends beyond cultural display; it reinforces the importance of city-to-city diplomacy in fostering international understanding. As Germany and China celebrate decades of diplomatic relations, such events help bridge cultural gaps and promote mutual appreciation.
